About San Francisco
Ever since the days of the Gold Rush, San Francisco has had a reputation as a place where anything goes, and where people come to follow their dreams. Today this same liberal spirit is reflected in our city's tolerance, diversity and open-mindedness. San Francisco is a city with a long history of support for alternative lifestyles and identities, from the beatniks, hippies and colorful eccentrics of the 1950s and 60s, to the gay rights revolution of the 70s, to the transgender movement of today. Anti-discrimination laws protect crossdressers from harassment and inferior treatment by businesses. Thanks to the efforts of progressive politicians, San Francisco is the first city in the nation to include sex reassignment surgery among the health benefits offered to city employees and their domestic partners. The city recently opened the Harvey Milk Community Center, the exterior of which includes the word "trangender" in giant letters across its side. While it is not guaranteed that every single Bay Area resident will greet you with a friendly and open attitude while you're crossdressed, most of the city's populace has pretty much seen it all.
What you do and where you stay in San Francisco pretty much depends on your comfort level en femme. Please follow the links at the top of the page to find lists of places where you'll find a particularly welcoming environment.
